Being the natural successor of the HTC Desire, HTC Desire S was first introduced at MWC 2011 in Barcelona, back in February. Notable features of the Desire S were its better GPU, bigger amounts of RAM and ROM, and faster connectivity, but keeping all that aside, the upgrade itself wasn’t as dramatic as everyone was expecting it to be.
HTC Desire S was launched with an Android version of 2.3.3 Gingerbread and HTC Sense UI 2.1 out of the box. But after a period of being in a dead zone, it looks like HTC has decided an update for the Desire S is on the cards, and has started rolling it out without so much as a whisper - the update has been noticed among users of the Desire S in the UK, who've been getting notifications about the update, in the lingering last days of September.
Just like always with a ROM update, the user will get the notifications as a pop up, with the update meant solely for stock Desire S ROM users. So, this means the update is also carrier specific, and as usual will take a little longer.
This update should boost up the performance of your Desire S as the Gingerbread version will be updated from 2.3.3 to 2.3.5 along with the Sense UI 2.1 moving up to 3.0 - all of which clearly means key updates like the interactive lock screen, new animations, an updated launcher as well as a host of new widgets, will all be present in this round. The latest version of the market will also be updated along with access to HTC’s Watch Service, as well as some software fixes for better GPS performance.
Last May, certain manufacturers and carriers at Google I/O agreed that their Android devices would receive full support for 18 months after the launch of the devices. At par, it seems HTC has most certainly made good on that promise. But as we speak, we have no word on the carrier locked ROMs and the timelines of the update globally.
