new kindle 2011
Since the release of the Nook two Octobers ago, there have been a strong battle for the best ebook reader on the market between the Nook and Kindle. Recent developments are the release of the new Kindle 3, the Nook's improvements in software and a few changes in hardware, and the shocking release of the Nook Color to really confuse the issue for consumers. Let's take a detailed look at some of these events and how it effects the Nook vs Kindle battle.
Amazon released the 3rd generation of Kindle, otherwise known as the "Kindle 3" in late August of 2010. There were many changes to the Kindle that could be seen as systematically one-upping the Nook.
Amazon came out with an ereader that took everything to the next level. Battery life was extended to 30 days, memory was increased to 3,500 titles, the device was made smaller and lighter, two colors were offered, the e-ink screen was improved, two models (3G and 3G+WiFi) were offered, and the price was significantly dropped to $139 for the 3G and $189 for the 3G + WiFi version.
Nook's improvements have been substantial, despite the same look of the device since it's release in October 2009.
Most recently, the new Nook 1.5 software update gave the device faster page turn speeds, the ability to lock the Nook, more ways to organize titles with "shelves" and automatic page syncing across devices.
Hardware issues included cracking by the page turn buttons when the Nook was initially released, but has since been fixed. Otherwise the Nook is basically the same physical design as the released product of two Octobers ago.
