parthenon greece
The Parthenon was constructed on the island of Greece flanked by the Mediterranean Sea. Many buildings and temples constructed during these times were usually constructed as a tribute to the gods and godesses of Greek mythology. The Parthenon was constructed under the rule of Pericles between 447 and 432 B.C. It was built in honor of Athena, the goddess of thought. A large gold and ivory statue was dedicated to her honor circa 438 B.C. but was latered destroyed by the years. At one time, the Parthenon towered the Grecian sky at 525ft, today, it stands at 335ft. The western portion remains intact, however, the eastern portion was transported to Britain by Lord Elgin. It has served as a Temple for the Goddess Athena, a Christian church, and a mosque. Today, preservation efforts continue to be made to rebuild the Parthenon to it's former glory.
